The engine in the Volvo Cross Country is a light pressure turbo. It is transversely mounted to provide good weight distribution, and chassis balance and a roomy passenger compartment. It is designed for high torque at low and medium engine speeds to guarantee good response and acceleration in normal driving conditions. Four-valve technology and automatic disconnect of the air conditioning unit at fast acceleration add to the increased performance of the Cross Country. The cast-iron cylinder liners are cast into the block, providing a total contact area that affords maximum heat dissipation between liner and block. For maximum strength and rigidity, the block is provided with cast-iron reinforcing elements under the crankshaft, where the stresses are highest. The engine is extremely compact thanks to the small bore of the cylinders and the minimum spacing between them. The advanced All Wheel Drive (AWD) system with viscous coupling and 4-wheel Traction Control System (TRACS), gives you maximum stability in the most challenging road conditions. A viscous coupling is a device known as a viscous clutch and is located between the front and rear axles, distributing the engine power to the wheels with the best traction. Discs and a viscous substance made of a silicon grease help to ensure a smooth change in the distribution of power. When the road is dry: Power is divided between the wheels according to the changing conditions.
